Quote I’ve been pondering – “This is an economy based on connection. Can you be heard, can you connect, can you be trusted?” – Seth Godin

Seriously / Personally – Staying with Seth Godin, he wrote a blog post this week that’s stuck with me. He basically says you can take it seriously but you don’t have to take it personally. You can read it here. It’s only a couple of paragraphs yet its power is incredible if you make it a part of your day.

On parenting – Brené Brown shared some thoughts on a lesson in parenting that have stuck with her since having children. It’s actually a lesson any of us can be put into practice across all areas of life, from working with others to spending time out with close friends.

It really resonates with me as my wife and I already try hard to act in this way. What I hadn’t done is frame it in the way  Brené does. Now I can really work at it! It’s priceless, go take a look.

Career advice I’m readingGary Vaynerchuk merged and published 5 pieces of career advice on LinkedIn last week. I particularly like No. 4 Chase the process, not just the end result.

Overall I’m mixed on Gary’s posts on LinkedIn at the moment. It’s pretty evident he’s not doing them himself, as many are sloppier than his more polished content on other networks. That aside, it’s the content message that counts and his always resonates.

Productivity tool I’ve gone all in on – Nick at Getonwithit.blog put me onto this one and now I’m fully in. I’ve converted all my Evernote to Notion and am even using it at work too.

It’s fantastic and if you follow my posts already you’ll notice I mention it quite a bit. If you aren’t using it then I think you’ll be surprised when giving it a go. Enjoy!

I hope you have a fantastic weekend doing the things you enjoy with the people you love.

Quote I’m pondering “I’ve been inspired by a shitload of people in my life so if there’s ever anybody that I can inspire, to me that’s a huge gift. To be able to turn that back around.” – Joe Rogan

Most interesting read – Artificial intelligence has solved the ‘magical mystery’ of several Beatles songs. With 76% accuracy, algorithms and machine learning are telling us who did what on some of the greatest songs you’ve ever heard. Check out more at HDSR.

Email like a boss – This graphic from the talented Dani Donovan is helping me become more effective at responding to messages at work. Take a look for yourself, the results aren’t clear for me just yet, though using these terms feels nicer so I’m sticking to them.

Did we land on the moon? – This one has always fascinated me. I’m open minded to everything, working hard not to believe something just because organisations and experts say it’s true. I look at all the evidence. Right now I do believe we landed on the moon, though if evidence in the future shows we didn’t, I’m open to it. The Guardian has published a long form read on the popularity of moon landings being faked. It’s a well written piece whatever you might believe.

New app I’m using – Thanks to a fellow blogger Nick Severson, the Notion app came my way. Currently I’m using it in parallel with Evernote and it’s looking pretty great. It’s got everything you might need in one place – journal, lists and notes. It’s like Trello, Evernote and Asana all in one on steroids. If you have multiple apps for notes, organising, reading lists and journaling take a look at Notion, it’s likely to be something you’ll enjoy trying too.

I hope you have a fantastic weekend doing the things you enjoy with the people you love.

Quote I’ve been pondering “To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly.” – Henri Bergson

Books in 8 minutes – I’ve been reminding myself of classic books and learning about new ones using these 8 minute videos. The author has a great style and flow, they really are good. He also shares the tools he uses in case you’re interested in producing vids yourself.

Staying with learning – HBR has a great read here, inspiring me to practice metacognition, that is stopping myself and asking if I really get something, which I realised I’ve not been doing. Learning is a learned behaviour and we can all get better at it.

I’m getting more productive & inspired – I’ve returned to ‘Epic music’ on YouTube and Apple Music for the last week. I’m finding that when practicing metacognition, as well as producing content for work or my blog, epic music is a fantastic driver for results. I recommend trying it yourself to see if you notice a difference too? YouTube has some cracking tunes here: YouTube 2 hours of Epic Music

Want to improve your life? Just learn to say no – I’m constantly trying to improve my ability to say no to the non essential. It’s not easy, especially at work. The Guardian published a terrific piece with insights and advice, ending with the great Warren Buffet quote “Successful people say no to almost everything”
